Advanced Optical PerformanceA state-of-the-art optical design with two AA (advanced aspherical) elements and three ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements accurately reproduces point light sources with high contrast and an absolute minimum of sagittal flare for crisp, clear images of challenging subjects such as night scenes and starry skies. The Nano AR coating suppresses reflections, flare and ghosting, while the fluorine coating on the front lens element repels water, oil, and other contaminantsfor sharp, clear images. |
Beautiful, natural - looking bokehThe deep, beautiful bokeh available with a max. F1.8 aperture is enhanced by a 9-blade circular aperture mechanism and precise control of spherical aberration characteristics that influence the defocused background quality. The FE 20mm F1.8 G lens delivers the type of smooth, natural-looking bokeh that discerning users have come to expect from a G Lens. |
Two A A ( Advanced Aspherical) lens elementThe 20mm F1.8G lens employs two precision AA (Advanced Aspherical) elements to maximize resolution and effectively compensates for field curvature and astigmatism that can be problematic in wide-angle lenses, achieving high corner-to-corner resolution even with the narrow depth-of-field produced at the lens’s maximum F1.8 aperture. |

---|---|---|---|
Three ED glass elementsThree ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements significantly reducing flare and ghostingby taking axial chromatic aberration and chromatic aberration(due to differences in magnification)out of the picture. Resolution and bokeh is maximized while leaving precisely rendered edges with no fringing or unnatural colorationright out to the image edges. |
F1. 8 max apertureThe F1.8max aperture maintains exposure and depth of field, allowing you to isolate your subject from the foreground and background with amazing light gathering capabilities when shooting wide open. When changing your aperture to defocus the background, the areasout of the focal plane appear blurred. This ‘bokeh’ effect of the blurred background is enhanced with circular aperture blades used in this lens. |
XD Linear Motors for fast, precise, quiet focusingThe FE 20mm F1.8 G lens incorporates a precision internal focus mechanismconsisting of two XD (extreme dynamic) Linear Motors that easily keep up with the high-speed capabilities of today’s most advanced camera bodies, taking advantage of their full autofocus speed, precision, and tracking potential to capture the most dynamic subjects. New control algorithms make it possible to drive the lens’s focus group smoothly and without delays for responsive, silent, low-vibration and continuous autofocusin both still and video modes. |
Nano AR coating suppresses reflections, flare and ghostingFlare and ghosting are often hard to avoid when shooting landscapes or outdoor scenes in strong sunlight with a wide-angle lens. Sony’s original Nano AR Coating technology effectively suppresses internal reflections so that high-contrast, clear images can be captured even in difficult light. |

Compact, lightweight designThis lens weighs just 0.82lb. (373g) and measures in at only 2.89” x 3.33“ (73.5 x 84.7 mm). It’s small size and light weight enhance mobility when used with compact E-mount Full-frame or APS-C bodies and make up a well-balanced system that is ideal for use on gimbals or accessory grips. |
30mm equivalent on APS-C bodiesThe FE 20mm F1.8 G lens is highly recommended for APS-C as well as full-frame users.Itbalances well on smaller APS-C format bodies, providing a very useful wide-angle focal length of 30mm (full-frame format equivalent). 30mm is great for taking snapshots around town, shooting scenery while hiking or mountain climbing, and much more. |
Aperture ring with switchable click stopsIn addition to providing the fast, hands-on response required for still and moviemaking applications, the FE 20mm F1.8 G lens’saperture ring includes a switch that turns its click stops on or off: ON for tactile feedback when shooting stills, or OFF for silent control when shooting movies. The combination of quiet XD Linear Motors and the quiet operation available when the click stops are off is not only great for smooth, seamless aperture control when shooting movies, but also for shooting theater, concerts, and events where noise must be minimized. |

Customizable multi-function focus hold buttonThe focus hold button not only performs its primary function to lock focus when recomposing but can be customized via the camera body menu settings to a number of other functions depending on your needs. In addition to Focus Hold, these custom functions include: Eye AF, AF On, Aperture Preview, Shot Result Preview or Bright Monitoring. |
Instant auto/manual focus selectionInstantly and quickly switch between auto and manual focus via an AF/MF switch on the side of the lens. This makes operation faster and easier as you let the camera and lens focus for you or decide to take control and manually focus on the precise point you choose. |
Natural, linear manual focus responseLinear Response MF (manual focus) ensures that the focus ring responds directly and linearly to subtle control when focusing manually. Focus ring rotation translates directly to a corresponding change in focus, so control is feels immediate and precise in both still and movie modes. |
Dust and moisture resistant1 for robust reliabilityThe dust and moisture resistance1 design make this lens appropriate for heavy-duty outdoor use, especially when combined with a camera that employs weather resistant measures. |

I do not use this for photos due to the wide focal length, but it is great for YouTube thumbnails, very wide and sharp. Awesome lens, highly recommend.
For much less I could get a slightly slower lens from other manufacturers but I chose to bite the bullet and go for the best quality.
I am very happy with this decision. The fast lens f 1.8 lens is a great fit for me because I shoot so many pictures in the dark and low light environments. The picture quality is superb wide open and definitely sharp enough for the pictures that I take.
FOCUSING: This new method of focus driving is far superior to anything else that I have tried.
Nothing that I have beats it in speed, accuracy and volume.
That's right, volume. This lens is nearly silent which is a huge plus for hybrid photo/video shooters.
With that there are negatives:
This lens is physically larger than my other wide angle lenses (28mm f 2.,8) but that is due to the amount of high quality fast glass in this lens. It is totally worth the weight to me, but if you are hiking around with it and don't need the maximum aperture of f 1.8 I'd go with a lightweight compact lens.
I've had my concerns with the lens being damaged while it is powered off. You can feel the assemblies moving around under their own weight inside the lens. I am slightly worried about a large impact causing damage to the lens. I have not heard any other people reporting this as an issue, so I assume I am just worrying for no reason.
Conclusion: I'd buy this lens again if I had to. This is by far my favorite wide angle lens that I have tried yet.
I'd go for it over the 24mm GM if you're deciding between the two, the differences are almost meaningless when not compared back to back.

I'm very happy with this lens.
It's small and lightweight. It feels solidly built.
Optics are as perfect as they can be in this year of 2020.
Zero chromatic aberration on my a7iii using Capture One Pro 12.
Shooting stars I can see a TINY bit of CA, but not enough to bother me one iota.
Auto focus is fast and accurate, basically perfect for both still and video on my a7iii.
Focus transitions are smooth and little focus breathing.
I used to use, and still do somewhat, modified Nikkor primes on canon cameras and got used to having an aperture dial. It's really nice to have. I've accidentally bumped it from 1.8 to 2 or 2.5 in my lens pouch, and that's messed up a shot or two, but it's a quick fix if you're paying attention and you can always put it on A and control via camera. When it's on A it's locked in place and isn't going anywhere. For me I like it.
The hype for this lens is real. Sony knocked it out of the park imo.
I was looking to get a wide angle prime but didn't want to dish out the money for the 24 1.4 GM.
I'm very pleased with my 20mm. 10/10 Thanks Sony.

This lens on my Sony A1 is absolutely brilliant. I have the Sigma 20mm 1.4 Art, which is also an amazing lens, but it’s just way too big and heavy. The Sony 20mm 1.8 G is under half the weight of the Sigma, which is an easy trade for that 2/3-stop difference. In fact, after some tests I’ve discovered that the actual transmission difference is only about a half-stop between the two.
Even though they’re both 20mm, the Sony G is noticeably wider than the Sigma. The Sony also exhibits a bit of focus breathing whereas the Sigma doesn’t.
Both are super sharp lenses, but the Sony G is noticeably sharper when pixel peeping. The Sony also focuses quicker and more confidently, as well as having a much closer minimum focus distance. Often when using the Sigma with a flash to cover dancing at the end of a wedding reception, I would have to stop the lens down to around f/2.8 otherwise most shots would slightly miss focus. With the Sony G I can shoot wide open in this scenario and it almost always nails focus, tack-sharp.
If you’re looking for a 20mm for Sony FE then this is the lens to get.
It’s expensive but it’s a special lens.
I haven’t taken it of f/1.8 yet and don’t want to. Only thing is now is my legacy 20mm primes which I have been so fond of have taken a back seat. I didn’t think it would happen. But this lens has enough personality to keep on the camera most of the time. It’s a focal length that is similar to the iPhone so it’s not way out there like you might think.
light weight and small
looks like It will be my main lens for everyday use
